Trying to decide which type of roofing material is the best for your commercial building is a tough decision. Here at J. Smucker Contracting, we understand all aspects of the roofing industry and can help make the decision easy. Two of the most popular single-ply membranes are  TPO and PVC. Both roofing systems have their benefits and disadvantages, so we will help you understand the difference between the two, so you can make an educated decision on which is best for your building.

Common Benefits in TPO and PVC

Understanding the benefits of both roofing membranes helps show why these are gaining popularity quickly in the roofing industry for commercial roofing. TPO single ply roofing membrane and PVC single ply roofing membrane are both designed for;

  • Easy Installation
  • Energy-Efficient
  • Resistance to Chemicals, Grease, and Oils
  • Mechanically Fastened or Fully Adhered
  • Heat welded
  • Resistance to Heat and UV Light

All of these benefits reiterate why we have been installing more single ply roofing membranes than ever before. The differences below will help you make the best decision for your choice of roof.

Differences in TPO and PVC

  • Years on The Market – TPO single ply roofing was designed to be a cheaper and better-designed alternative to PVC when it was introduced twenty years ago. The advantage PVC has is its long track record. With over 30 years of trial and error, testing product formulas, and receiving feedback from roofers and business owners, PVC has had many changes for the better where as TPO is still new and in its first 20 years of testing.
  • Membrane Formula – PVC has plasticizers and Conklin’s PVC is reinforced with Elvaloy that allow this type of roof covering to maintain its flexibility, and will hold up for a long time. TPO does not have plasticizers and the formula tends to be inconsistent so it’s difficult to predict how it will react.
  • Membrane Cracking and Curing – Some building owners have reported that unknown brands of TPO have cracked when the weather fluctuates excessively. Since many manufacturers are producing and selling their own unique formulas of TPO, it’s difficult to narrow down what the problem is.

Both TPO and PVC are great options when considering price, coverage, and longevity. The J. Smucker team has experience installing both and is confident that we can help you make the best decision for your business’ building.
